THE RISK OF ALCOHOL FOR WOMEN
Women are more vulnerable, than men to alcohol effects. Studies show that the effects of alcohol are stronger in women than in men, and women who drink too much alcohol are more likely to suffer from significant alcohol problems than men. For women, alcohol can cause cancer especially breast cancer, infertility, and pregnancy complications.
It's clear that alcohol causes cancer. Alcohol can increase levels of estrogen and other hormones associated with hormone-receptor-positive cancer. In 2014, around one in five alcohol related deaths are due to cancer. The most common type of cancer for women is breast cancer. Women who have three alcoholic drinks per week have a 15% higher risk of breast cancer and that risk goes up another 10% for each additional drink women regularly have each day.
Alcohol can also dirupt a woman's menstural cycle and that can cause infertility. Drinking between one and five drinks a week can reduce a woman’s chances of conceiving, and 10 drinks or more decreases the likelihood of conception even further. Excessive alcohol consumption may lead to anovulation (lack of ovulation), amenorrhea (lack of menstruation), luteal phase defect (abnormal development of the endometrial lining), and hyperprolactinemia (over-production of breast milk which inhibits fertility). If theres a woman trying to have a baby, it's recommended to not drink alcohol because it decreases the chance of getting pregnant.
Drinking alcohol at any stage during pregnancy can cause harm to the baby and the more a woman drinks, the greater the risk. Women who are pregnant and consume alcohol on their pregnancy can put themselves at risk for miscarriage. Even drinking one glass of wine on a regular basis can put the unborn fetus at risk of several developmental, mental, and emotional disorders, according to March of Dimes.
The damage alcohol cause are worst for women. Not just women, everybody around us will feel the effects.
