THE RISK OF ALCOHOL FOR WOMEN Women are more vulnerable, than men to alcohol effects. Studies show that the effects of alcohol are stronger in women than in men, and women who drink too much alcohol are more likely to suffer from significant alcohol problems than men. For women, alcohol can cause cancer especially breast cancer, infertility, and pregnancy complications. It's clear that alcohol causes cancer. Alcohol can increase levels of estrogen and other hormones associated with hormone-receptor-positive cancer. In 2014, around one in five alcohol related deaths are due to cancer. The most common type of cancer for women is breast cancer. Women who have three alcoholic drinks per week have a 15% higher risk of breast cancer and that risk goes up another 10% for each additional drink women regularly have each day.
